"BEHIND THE SCENES".   A 10-part series on the arts, for PBS. Hosted by Penn and Teller and aimed at 8 to 12-year-olds, the series features David Hockney, Julie Taymor, Max Roach, Matt Groening, Nancy Graves, Wayne Thiebaud, Carrie Mae Weems and many others. Major funding for this ground-breaking series was provided by The National Endowment for the Arts, The MacArthur Foundation and McDonalds. "GOING BROKE IN AMERICA".   A two-hour documentary which explores poverty, debt, and living on the margin. The film follows the lives of several families who are in serious debt and struggling -- sometimes unsuccessfully -- to avoid bankruptcy. Aired in 1995.

"DANCING: SEX AND SOCIAL DANCE / THE INDIVIDUAL & TRADITION".   Two one-hour films for a major Public Television series on world dance. "The Individual and Tradition" follows Twyla Tharp as she creates a dance with New York City Ballet dancers Damian Woetzel, Susan Jaffee and others. "Sex and Social Dance" looks at social dance in the United States, the Cook Islands in the South Pacific, and Morocco. The film shows how cultural attitudes about coupling and gender are reflected in the way men and women dance with one another. (Co-production with the BBC; aired in Britain and the U.S. in the spring of 1993.)

"WRITERS WRITING".   A one-hour documentary which follows Washington Post reporter, Courtland Malloy, as he covers the story of mass evictions in Washington, DC.

"GREY GARDENS".   A theatrically released documentary that received much acclaim, the film was co-directed with the Maysles brothers. The film looks at the lives of Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Edie, the aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Onassis. 0nce a beautiful and much sought-after debutante, Little Edie never married and now, at age 56, still lives with her mother and at least thirty cats in a dilapidated mansion in East Hampton. Selected for Cannes, New York, London, and Edinburgh Film Festivals.

"SIX AMERICAN FAMILIES: THE BURKS OF GEORGIA".  The filmmakers spent several weeks with the Burks, a poor white family with thirteen children, living in rural Georgia. The film was co-directed with the Maysles brothers and produced by Group W-Westinghouse. Columbia-DuPont Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism.

"NICHOLS AND DIMES".  In this film about the ins and outs of business investment, Mike Nichols' very successful Arabian horse business is portrayed as an example. The film premiered CBS Cable's new (and now defunct) network.

"AN EMPIRE OF REASON".   A docu-drama about the debate surrounding New York State's ratification of the United States Constitution, the program stars Walter Cronkite, John Chancellor, William F. Buckley, Jr., Phil Donahue, Robert MacNeil, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, Forrest Sawyer, Andrea Mitchell and others. Governor Mario Cuomo and Mayor Ed Koch make cameo appearances. Emmy. Cine Gold Eagle, Best of Festival, Athens Film Festival. Gold Camera, U.S. Film Festival.

"EARTH EXPLORER".  A one-hour documentary which follows geophysicist Marsha MacNutt as she investigates the probable break-up of the North American continent. Part of the science series, DISCOVERING WOMEN, which aired nationally on PBS in the spring of 1995.

"ENORMOUS CHANGES AT THE LAST MINUTE".  A feature film for ABC, released theatrically in 1982. Based on stories by Grace Paley and written by John Sayles, the film stars Ellen Barkin and David Strathairn. Selected for London and Toronto film festivals.

"THE HACKERSTAR NEGOTATION".   A video about the art of negotiation, designed for businessmen, bankers, lawyers and students. The program follows a protracted negotiation led by Roger Fisher of the Harvard Negotiation Project. Sponsored by Morgan Guaranty Trust and the Harvard Negotiation Project.

"HERE'S MY QUESTION: WHERE DOES MY GARBAGE GO?"   A lively, entertaining film for children about garbage and recycling, with animation by New Yorker cartoonist Ed Koren, and music by Sesame Street composers. Numerous awards include the Oppenheimer Platinum Award.

"SESAME STREET" and "3-2-1 CONTACT".  Middlemarch has produced over thirty short documentaries for these two shows. Filmed all over the United States on a variety of subjects, they have aired continuously over the last twenty years. Several were among the few films selected to appear in a Sesame Street retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art.

"MR. PREBLE GETS RID OF HIS WIFE".  A short humorous drama based on the James Thurber short story, the film aired on HBO, PBS and the BBC. Red Ribbon, American Film Festival. Cine Gold Eagle.
